Jim has over 40 years of commercial trial and arbitration experience. He is recognized as one of the state’s leading attorneys. He spent the first 24 years of his career at Bracewell, serving as the managing partner of their Dallas office and on the firm’s Management Committee. Representing clients nationwide, Jim has worked both sides of the docket in complex commercial disputes. These include intellectual property, oil and gas, contracts, partnerships, real estate, fraud, trusts and estates, employment and professional liability. He represents officers and directors in Sarbanes-Oxley matters before the SEC and in court. He is also experienced in domestic and international arbitrations.
Jim was recognized by VerdictSearch for his contributions to the Nation’s Top Verdict for 2017.The following year he was admitted to America’s Top 100 High Stakes Litigators®. In 2006, Jim was named as one of “The Defenders” by the Dallas Business Journal. This elite designation recognized “the most brilliant minds in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area” – an honor for notable work in commercial defense.

Jim is a former President of the Dallas Chapter of the American Board of Trial Advocates. He is also class chairman of the University of Virginia Law Class of 1977, where he was awarded the Stephen Pierre Traynor Award in the finals of the William Minor Lile Moot Court competition.
Represented over 285 beneficiaries of a trust owning 132,000 acres of mineral interests in the Eagle Ford Shale play. First discovery well was drilled on their interests. Settled during trial in San Antonio.
Represented publicly-traded oil company in farmout dispute in Indonesia. After arbitration in Singapore, client received win in arbitration award, which was confirmed in Los Angeles.
Represented numerous individuals and entities in disputes involving tax advantaged strategies against their former advisors.
Represented numerous employees in covenant not to compete cases.
Represented numerous companies in trade secret theft cases, in defending their intellectual property.
Represented numerous patent owners in infringement suits; and defended against claims of invalidity.
Represented inventor in defamation case against two large oil & gas companies, resulting in multi-month jury trial and successful verdict and settlement.
Represented pipeline company in take-or-pay litigation; take-nothing jury verdict for the pipeline company; affirmed on appeal.
Represented former engineering employees in trade secret theft case; temporary injunction hearing; settled after discovery.
Represented Fortune 100 company in major contract enforcement case; TRO granted, and case settled shortly thereafter.
Represented accounting firm in RICO action; successful settlement after three weeks of trial.
Represented international steel manufacturer in dispute over pipe supplied to major pipeline project; settled after federal jury trial began.
Represented oil and gas entrepreneurs in fraud dispute; favorable verdict and judgment.
Represented international engineering company in asserting trade secret rights; proceedings in Texas and The Hague.
